Unlocking Policy

1. Unlocking Policy

The term “locked” refers to a device that can only be used with Boost on the Boost Wireless network and cannot be activated on a competing carrier’s network.  An “unlocked” device is no longer locked to Boost services and the user may attempt to activate it on another carrier’s network.

1.1 Wireless Mobile Devices on Postpaid Plans (“Postpaid Devices”):

For Boost customers and former Boost customers in good standing and individual owners of eligible devices on postpaid Boost plans, Boost will unlock such Postpaid Devices after your fulfillment of the applicable postpaid Boost service contract, device financing plan, or payment of early termination fee, if applicable.  Boost will automatically unlock such Postpaid Device remotely within two (2) business days of such Postpaid Device becoming eligible for unlocking, without additional fee.  However, if you meet the preceding requirements and it is not technically possible for Boost to automatically unlock your Postpaid Device remotely, Boost will instead provide immediate notice to you that your Postpaid Device is eligible to be unlocked.

1.2 Wireless Mobile Devices on Prepaid Plans (“Prepaid Devices):

For Boost customers and former Boost customers in good standing and individual owners of eligible devices on prepaid Boost plans, Boost will unlock such Prepaid Devices no later than one (1) year after initial activation, subject to reasonable time, payment, or usage requirements.  Boost will automatically unlock such prepaid devices remotely within two (2) business days of devices becoming eligible for unlocking, without additional fee.  However, if you meet the preceding requirements and it is not technically possible for Boost to automatically unlock your Prepaid Device remotely, Boost will instead provide immediate notice to you that your Prepaid Device is eligible to be unlocked.  With respect to Prepaid Devices, “reasonable time, payment, or usage” means:

  • No Prepaid Device balance: If you have financed your Prepaid Device, the Prepaid Device balance must be paid off in full before it is eligible for unlocking.
  • Account must be active: If your account is in “suspended” status one-year post initial activation, your Prepaid Device will not be eligible for unlocking until it is out of “suspended” status.
  • Not already unlocked: If your Prepaid Device is already unlocked because of a customer request (i.e. unlocked for international travel), it will not be automatically unlocked at the one-year mark.
  • If it is not technically possible to unlock your Prepaid Device remotely, or if your Prepaid Device does not meet the “reasonable time, payment or usage requirements” outlined above, Boost will send you a written notification once your Prepaid Device eligible for unlock.

Please note, Boost devices which the owner has attempted to reprogram or activate on another carrier's network or otherwise alter from its initial programming or settings may not be able to be reactivated with Boost services.

Boost will only activate devices certified to work with Boost services. Boost is not able to unlock phones from other carriers.

If you believe you meet the above requirements of this Unlocking Policy and would like to request that your Device be unlocked, please contact Boost by calling 833-50-BOOST (833-502-6678).

1.3 Unlocking for Military Personnel

Boost greatly appreciates the service that our U.S. military men and women provide at home and abroad. For military personnel deployed overseas, Boost has established a favorable unlocking policy, as follows:

  • The device is capable of international SIM unlock.
  • The subscriber is an active member of a branch of the United States military as well as family members who are on the same account as deployed personnel.
  • The subscriber has been issued overseas deployment papers.
  • The person requesting the unlock is a current, authenticated Boost customer.
  • The account is in good standing.
  • Each phone number is allowed up to two unlocked devices within a 12-month period.

Military personnel deployed overseas can contact Boost Customer Care to request to an international SIM unlock by calling 833-50-BOOST (833-502-6678).

Note Regarding Boost's Unlocking Policies:

Boost may refuse any unlock request that would result in an abuse of these policies, the Terms of Service or is part of an effort to defraud Boost or its customers. These policies are subject to change at Boost's discretion without advance notice.
